Ordoviitsiumi ja Siluri biomitmekesisust on uuritud pikka aega, kuid senised andmed paljude regioonide ja/või fossiilirühmade kohta on piiratud, taksonoomiliselt ebatäpsed ning ilma detailse ajalise ja geoloogilise taustata, mis takistab elu arengu mõistmist selle olulisel arenguetapil jättes mitmekesisuse tõusu ja languse põhjused sageli ebaselgeks. Kas mitmekesisuse hinnangud on adekvaatsed? Kuidas on mitmekesisuse muutused seotud regionaalsete ja globaalsete keskkonnamuutustega? Kuidas biomitmekesisus muutus erinevates faatsiestes ja paleokontinendi eri piirkondades? Millised on erinevate faunagruppide vahelised seosed? Käesoleva projekti eesmärgiks on neile küsimustele vastuste leidmine Balti regiooni andmete alusel. Projekt sisaldab (1) olulisemate faunagruppide taksonoomilist ja fülogeneetilist uuringut, (2) levikuandmete täiendamist, (3) integreeritud bio- ja kemostratigraafiat, (4) paleokeskkonna analüüsi, paleoökoloogiat ja paleobiogeograafiat.
